Amsterdam is fun, it’s photogenic, it’s walkable, and if you do some research beforehand you won’t have any trouble eating gluten free. Here’s a list of a few places that not only have gluten free options, but are knowledgeable about celiac disease and cross-contamination.
PANCAKES Amsterdam
Prinsengracht 277, 1016 GW Amsterdam, Netherlands

A chain of restaurants all around Amsterdam with amazing gluten free pancakes! These were absolutely delicious — one of our favorite meals of the trip. Pancakes are a Dutch staple, and we were so glad we didn’t have to miss out while we were there.
One thing to note is that occasionally the restaurants run out of the gluten free mix, so it’s worth asking up front if they have it. The first location we went to were out, but the server was really nice and called another location just a few minutes down the street for us to confirm they had it.
Celiac plus points: Although they do serve regular pancakes here as well, the gluten free ones are prepared on separate pans in a separate part of the kitchen. The staff are knowledgeable about Celiac Disease, and the GF pancakes come with a green chip so you know for certain there weren’t any mix-ups with your order.
We tried: lemon and sugar pancake, spinach, goat cheese and pine nut pancake
Cafe Piazza
Kloveniersburgwal 5, 1011 JT Amsterdam, Netherlands

An Italian restaurant with a full gluten free menu. One of the few places where you can order gluten free lasagna! The desserts were incredible too.
Celiac plus points: The servers are well-informed about cross-contamination and their GF food is prepared in a separate part of the kitchen.
We tried: lasagna, chocolate truffle ice cream, and panna cotta
Craft Coffee & Pastry
Gerard Doustraat 103A, 1073 VS Amsterdam, Netherlands

Ok, so if there’s one place you have to go in Amsterdam, it’s Craft Coffee & Pastry. This bakery is 100% gluten free and their croissants are out of this world. By far the best GF croissants we’ve ever had. They have all the flaky layers and buttery goodness you’d want from a croissant. We were in heaven. They even warmed up well the next day!
Celiac plus points: Everything is gluten free. One of the owners is a celiac.
We tried: plain, chocolate, and almond croissants. We also couldn’t resist taking a few of their almond cookies to go.
Sumo Sushi
Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 17, 1017 RP Amsterdam, Netherlands

Japanese sushi restaurant with a menu that includes allergen labels (if you’re like me you love those little symbols that make navigating a menu super easy). Many of the rolls contain gluten, but the good news is that if you ask, the chefs can prepare many of them gluten free. If you tell them you have celiac disease they’ll write “Glutenvrij” at the top of your ordering card. You write down which rolls you want, and the chefs will leave out any gluten-containing ingredients to ensure all of your sushi is gluten free. They have tamari (gluten free soy sauce) as well, which we always appreciate.
The location we went to was a large place, and not all of the servers are clued up, so make sure you ask to talk to someone who is. But the chefs in the kitchen take GF seriously, and if you order a roll that contains gluten, it’ll come back gluten free regardless. We ordered a cream cheese and salmon roll that came out with just salmon, with the explanation that the cream cheese was a ‘may contain’. We were really grateful for that level of attention to our order. And the sushi was fab!
Celiac plus points: When you say you’re a celiac, the chefs automatically remove any ingredient from the dish that may contain gluten.
Loulou Pizzabar
Weesperzijde 42A, 1091 EE Amsterdam, Netherlands
https://goo.gl/maps/yGDUfsxiEqBJSA4R7
Popular, busy pizza bar. They’re super knowledgeable about celiac disease and cross contamination. The gluten free pizzas are made in a separate area, and they use all GF flour in the kitchens to dust the surfaces. Every pizza on the menu can be made with a GF base, as all the toppings are GF. This is a fun little spot by the river in a popular area, so be sure to make a reservation.
Celiac plus points: They use GF flour for dusting.
We tried: Margherita pizza, diavola pizza, panna cotta
De Glutenvrije Winkel
Pretoriusstraat 37, 1092 EZ Amsterdam, Netherlands

This 100% gluten free little grocery shop is out of the way from the center, but it’s worth a tram ride. They have a selection of the usual supermarket brands, plus some that were new to us, but they also have a bakery. They make their own bread, pies, cakes, pastries, and more. We got a couple of their dark seeded bread rolls to make sandwiches for the train home the next day, and they were excellent (especially with the pesto gouda we had picked up)!
We also tried their boterkoek (Dutch butter cake) which melted in our mouths. Highly recommend the homemade treats here!
Celiac plus points: Everything in the store, including their bakery, is 100% gluten free.
We tried: dark seeded rolls, boterkoek, macarons, various cookies.
Croque Madame
Sint Annendwarsstraat 24a, 1012 HC Amsterdam, Netherlands
https://goo.gl/maps/X2RKUMJAzpyQQXoo7
Little cafe right in the red light district. Everything on the menu is gluten free. And amazing! This is a small, family-owned cafe who do really good gluten free food. The Netherlands are famous for gouda cheese. It’s unbelievably good, and they don’t skimp on it here! Croque Madame offers nachos, grilled cheese sandwiches (including croque madames of course!), cheeseburgers, and more. They also have a selection of homemade cakes, which were so good. This was our first stop the night we got in and we were so excited about being in a little gluten free haven that we forgot to take pictures. Guess we’ll have to go back.
Celiac plus points: The whole place is gluten free. The owners’ children are celiacs.
We tried: nachos, double cheeseburger, croque madame, red velvet cake and toblerone cake. Yum.
Bagels & Beans
De Clercqstraat 22HS, 1052 ND Amsterdam, Netherlands
https://goo.gl/maps/mfcZKtiAacoWn1se9
This very popular chain isn’t fully gluten free, but they do have gluten free options and seem to be knowledgeable about cross contamination. We know very well how difficult it is to find a gluten free bagel (famous for its springy, gluten-y consistency), and while the ones they serve here are actually quite good, they’re more like a really nice, light bread roll rather than a bagel.
One thing to note is that only the cold bagel options are gluten free, as the hot bagel sandwiches are warmed up in the same oven as the non-GF ones. We were told this right away, and were glad they servers were clued up, and clearly taking cross-contamination seriously.
We tried: GF bagel with walnut honey cream cheese
